New division, same result for Franklin

MARLBOROUGH - Last night’s state wrestling finals at Marlboro High School featured six of the best teams in Massachusetts. At night’s end, there was little doubt which was the king of the hill.

Franklin, last year’s Division 2 champion, handily defeated Springfield Central for the Division 1 title, 38-20.

“It’s an accomplishment for us, the kids, the program, and the team,’’ said coach Carmine Colace. “We’ve got a great group of seniors that go out with a big bang, winning a Division 1 and a Division 2 state title.’’                                        (Click here for complete Story)

Franklin 38, Springfield Central 20: Double take

MARLBOROUGH — Not many athletes can say they won a state championship in high school. Even fewer can say they won back-to-back titles.

The Franklin wrestling team can now make that claim. But with a little twist.

The Panthers won the Division 2 championship last year and moved up to Division 1 this year. The result was no different. Last night, Franklin claimed the Div. 1 championship with a 38-20 victory over Springfield Central at Marlborough High.

"It feels better than last year because (Division 1) is supposedly all the top teams," said senior Dan Telhada, who had a key pin at 145 pounds. "Now we're champs in both. It doesn't get any better."

"We have a great group of seniors that go out with a big bang winning Division 1 and Division 2 state titles in their careers," Franklin coach Carmine Colace said. "You couldn't ask for anything more."

Colace stated his desire to prove that the southern part of the state is as strong as other areas, and with titles at two levels, the Panthers showed they can match up with anybody.

"We've had pockets of good wrestling in our area, but sometimes people think they're from the South or the MetroWest area and aren't as good," Colace said. "I think wrestling in our area is getting better. I don't know if this makes a statement or not, but I feel like sometimes we're representing Southeastern Mass. or the MetroWest area."
